Why Maintain?

1) If there is standing water, make sure that all electrical power has been turned off in the affected area.

2) Keep children and pets away from contaminated areas.

3) Wear rubber or strong disposable gloves when cleaning contaminated areas.

4) It is important to air out the area before starting cleanup, or if this is not possible, taken frequent breaks in fresh air to avoid getting sick from foul odors.

5) Use household disinfectants or sanitizers or a liquid chlorine bleach (1/4 cup per one gallon of water) to disinfect contaminated areas. Do not combine ammonia and chlorine products as they will emit a toxic gas. Items that cannot be thoroughly cleaned, such as mattresses, carpeting, bedding, some furniture, may need to be thrown out if contaminated.

6) Scrub furniture, walls, appliances, and fixtures with hot tap water and detergent. Wash any clothing or bedding with hot water and detergent.

7) Any cloth toys or stuffed animals that were infected, should be thrown out. Plastic toys must be disinfected in chlorine bleach solution and then air dried or thrown out.

8) Any food that was in the contaminated area, must be thrown out if not in cans or in cans that are dented, bulging or leaking. Cans that are in good condition should be washed in a bleach solution and soaked for atleast five minutes. Do not eat or drink anything prior to thoroughly washing your hands even though you had them gloved during cleanup. Contaminated bottles should be thrown out because of the inability to completely disinfect under the caps.

9) Immediately after cleaning up, shower with soap and hot water, paying special attention to your face, hands and fingernails.

10) Call your doctor or local treatment center if you or a family member begins to experience diarrhea. This is a common health problem that follows exposure to sewage or contaminated water.

11) As quick as possible after cleaning, dry the areas with a fan or dehumidifier and open windows. This will help prevent mold and mildew.
